NO2ID Worcester - December Monthly Meeting Outcome

Attendees:

Mark Walker (Local Group Coordinator)

Brian Gladman

Stuart Herbert (newcomer/observer)

We did not really expect high numbers as notice of its happening were sent out at short notice and its the Christmas season.

Discussion

Plans for the Worcester Stall this coming Saturday (13th)

Going to be in front of the Guild Hall, at least two members of Birmingham NO2ID shall assist with numbers and that it was going to be happening in the Afternoon. I shall update you all with more detail shortly.

Guest/Observer introductions

Myself and Brian gave a brief rundown on the ID card issue we meet about - these included:

  • Costs
  • Mass Data Collection/Surveillance and the risks of that with recent Data losses.
  • Storing of Biometrics despite innocence

We also gave a briefing on what the group had been doing in the last few months.

Council Motion Strategy

Largely conservative council but some seemed unconcerned/uninterested about the ID cards issue. Methods of encouraging an interest talked about. Should be able to pursue one being put through before the end of January 2009 if action is taken.

Worcester NO2ID Meeting - 10th December- The PortoBello Inn

Hello Everyone,

Noticed we have been quite quiet? Yes this is very true. The injuries from my accident meant walking was a hell of a game and the last months meeting never really happened. Sad but true.

The end of the year looms but I think its perfectly worth continuing as normal with our usual group meeting. With myself being unable to hold meetings in the last few months, I intend to keep NO2ID Worcester(shire) firmly together.

There are even plans afoot to do a stall this weekend!

So as always anyone is welcome to turn up. The curious, the players of devils advocate and casual observer - all of you are welcome :D

Location is the Portobello Inn at 8pm - Wednesday the 10th of December. A link to directions can be found on meetings page of the website.

See you all there!

NO2ID Birmingham - Invades Redditch

A few days ago concept became reality and the Birmingham crew of NO2ID invaded the streets of Reddtich. Well done you lot!

Its a fantastic thing to know the reception you had was so warm from both the press, politicians and general public was so warm. Not to mention highly embaressing to Miss Smith who seems to be quite wrong in saying people cant wait to have an ID card, not the impression given by the people of Redditch.

Well done Birmingham :)

We are back!

Yes for any of you who are wondering where we went in the last few months, it can basically be summed up by two things.

First off I ended up in a road traffic collision on the motorway which put me out of action for the last few months. Needless to say, this made co-ordinating payments interesting and consequentially. Our website got clobbered.

That aside and all problems sorted out we are ready to hit the road again.

Meeting Location Change

Todays monthly meeting - August 13th has had to have its location changed as our normal meeting place at the Portobello Inn has closed due to a sale.

For now and possibly all future meetings we shall be meeting at The Pheasant in the town centre.

The entire website will reflect these changes shortly.

Worcester NO2ID Meeting - 9th July

Sadly this meeting didnt go all that well. I had major issues with my transportation in form of a coolant leak which majorly disrupted my punctuality. Thankfully the engine survived it so nuff said there.

When I made it, many members seemingly were unable to make it which was a bit of a shame but also a blessing as I would have kept them all waiting.

Brian thankfully was able to make it so I updated him on the situation as to where we were with the website migration (completed) and showed him a number of emails from various members of the Worcester County Council.

I must have misinterpreted one of them as a key member was quite positive and encouraging on the topic putting forward a motion against ID Card within the council. As Brian has more experience with them than me I have left it to him to find the best candidate to carry this motion and hopefully draft something up!

Quite a productive session despite being 4 down!

NO2ID Edinburgh - Arrested but no charges!

I suspected this might happen, when some of the NO2ID lot decided to pay peaceful protest to the a public meeting which had about as much public in it as chalk has cheese. Mostly people with a vested commercial interest in it. Naturally it came as a rather nasty surprise when some NO2ID folks turned up inside and outside the venue.

Instead of just being decent and either allowing questions asked from a member whom had managed to make it inside the conference room, they did the silly thing and decided to have the lot of them arrested.

Now from watching documentaries like Taking Liberties, its pretty clear that when you arrest peaceful protesters that have done next to sod all wrong, you tend to look like the bad guy. The example that comes to mind most notably was when a Vegan Chef from the Hastings area was arrested for reading out the names of the dead as a result of the Iraq war.

She became a minor celebrity.

I must commend the government on this one. They realised how the arrest of the NO2ID Nine already looked. With the David Davis byelection being quite big in the news I reckon it must have been clear (as they hate actually debating anything to do with civil liberties) that this would being ID cards to the forefront of the media was the last thing they wanted and funnily enough all charges were dropped.

Website Migration

Just thought I would let you know our site migration went off without a hitch. The database moved easily with only a minor bit of techie work to point all its references at our new location and the wordpress installation moved just fine too.

Thanks to Streamline for being so easy to use and for minimal slowdowns or blips. There have been a few of late but I guess you must have been doing scheduled mantenance of late.

Worcester Group Progress

Some news of whats been going on:

Obviously we have previously published Stourbridge News press release which was an excellent little nugget of publicity for Worcester NO2ID

A Local Starter Injection!

Yup after a little encouragement on ID Groups I finally received the Local Group Starter Pack I have been promised for so long :).  Thanks to Matty and Guy and those oh so dedicated people in the London HQ offices. In this little (but very heavy mind you :P) box of joy we had lots of…

  • Trifold Leaflets
  • Badges
  • Stickers
  • Pledge Certificates
  • Mini pledge business cards
  • Posters!

Plenty of supplies for our upcoming stall….watch this space!

“Holy domain names and hosting batman!”

I have sorted out this websites domain name, so no more hosting on weird and funky dynamic domain names. Very soon the Worcester site is going to be moving to its new hosting over at streamline. Keep our place on your drives warm guys :). I will have the fun of convincing Wordpress to not cry when we separate it from where it grew up on my home server :P.

This may well have happened by the time you read this and hopefully no-one should notice a thing if my geek-foo is strong ;).

Worcester NO2ID - Mentioned in Stourbridge News!

Having recently localised the recent ID in the News press release:

BBC forges Home Secretary’s driving licence - ID-card chaos on the way

It seems the Stourbridge News picked it up and used it! Thus giving Worcester NO2ID some minor publicity :D. This would actually be my first published press release so first time everything eh?
