[Who?]
We are a NO2ID local group set up specifically to provide information on the threat of ID cards and the accompanying database - The “National ID Register” relevant to residents of Worcester and surrounding areas. We consider the proposed ID register an infringement on our basic freedoms and our right to privacy.

Why Should I Care?
The first reason is expense; the ID cards are not free and fines may be incurred if you fail to notify the government if any of the declared information changes or send back the card of a recently deceased relative. There is more to consider than just personal expense, the proposed ID register will be expensive for everybody, it’s estimated that it could cost up to £18,000,000,000 (18 Billion) over the next 10 years. To put this in perspective this is enough to finance:
- 80 New Hospitals
- 1,600 New Schools
- 30,000 More Police Officers
- £3 per Week on Pensions
Consider is the scope of the National ID Register, you may be required to provide your ID card for anything from getting on a train, admission to higher education, applying for financial help to simply getting a drink at your favorite club. This means that almost every aspect of your life will depend on you possessing an ID card and the system functioning properly, if the computer says no, you’re out of luck.
Another thing to consider is not only privacy but the security aspect. The government claim the National ID Register will be one of the tools that help tackle the growing problem of Identity Theft, this argument is technically questionable due to the nature of the database all of the information required to successfully steal somebody’s identity will be in one central location with potentially thousands of people able to access it. With recent incidents such as the HMRC CD’s containing the details of child benefit claimants being lost and the DVLA free (well, £2.50) for all, do you trust this information not to be in the hands of the highest bidder? Biometric data is difficult to replace.
Im a Student, I dont need to care about this do I?
- Like your live music/gigs?
When ID cards are brought in, you will need to produce to get on a Plane or a Train. With the UK government’s history of I.T Projects, what happens when your cards get scanned and there is a problem? Sadly without a lift, you’re stuck there with concert tickets and no way to get there. Convenient eh?
- Like the little money you have?
These things are definitely not free. With costs at the bargain (lol!) price of 200 quid could your budget stand that sorta money? What about 1000 quid fines if you forget to update it or lose it. Easy to do during/after a big night out eh?
